Bishop Kallistos Ware

The 1998-1999 Weltin Lecture in Early Christianity

Bishop Kallistos Ware the Spalding Lecturer in Eastern Orthodox Studies and Fellow of Pembroke College at Oxford University. He received his doctorate from Oxford where he studies the history of early Eastern monasticism.

Active in ecumenical work, Bishop Kallistos is presently the Orthodox co-chair of the committee preparing for the proposed international Orthodox-Methodist dialogue. He is co-editor of Sobornost and has published widely on the history and faith of the Orthodox Church, with particular interest in the mystical theology of the Christian East. His books include The Orthodox Church, Eustratios Argenti: A Study of the Greek Church Under Turkish Rule and The Orthodox Way. He is co-translator of The Philokalia (in progress) and of two Orthodox service books The Festal Menaion and The Lenten Triodion.

Bishop Kallistos founded and has pastoral charge of the Greek Orthodox parish in Oxford. In 1982 he was consecrated titular Bishop of Diokleia and appointed Assistant Bishop in the Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain (Ecumenical Patriarchate).
